In this series we explore the deepest sources about what it means for Hashem to love, want, and even what it means that He has a hand. In this episode, we take a bold step and introduce a profound concept from Kabbalah: we have an essence too. It is common knowledge that Hashem is not His attributes (see Moreh Nevuchim 1:53), as that would imply a lack of unity. Rather, what the Torah describes are His “actions” and “expressions.” What is far less well known is that we are created this way too. At the very core of our being – beyond our body, and even beyond the soul as we usually think of it – we are also simple and unified. Our attributes and expressions are not us. Confusing the two is a superficial way of seeing reality. In fact, to do this to Hashem – to worship His attributes like His love, and strength – is idolatry, and to do this to one another is deeply offensive, cheapening our relationships to mere “things”; its own form of “idolatry”. But once we realise that this is what it means to be “created in His image,” we gain a far more visceral understanding of the depth and truth of our relationship with God. It’s real.
