Elmer Royce Williams is with a flight of four US Navy’s F9F Panthers on a bombing mission in North Korea, some 40 miles from the Soviet border. While still on route, over the Sea of Japan, the fleet’s radar detects a group of state-of-the-art MiG-15’s heading south. The bombing mission is scrubbed, as the Panthers turn to intercept the bogeys. Half of the American fighters are forced to turn back due to mechanical issues, leaving Williams and his wingman alone to face elite Soviet pilots. This is how Lt Royce Williams fought and defeated four Soviet MiG-15’s. Sources: Cleaver, Thomas McKelvey. Holding the Line: The Naval Air Campaign in Korea. Osprey Publishing, 2021.
