The group was on an escort mission for a strike force of 12 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers sent to attack Japanese shipping. DeBlanc reported that he had a serious fuel leak, and soon he and his wingman, Sgt. Jim Feliton had to leave the group and then to push into the battle against superior enemy forces: 2 American Wildcats vs 10 Nakajima Oscars. Forced to ditch, DeBlanc had to face terrors from the depths of the ocean and from the jungle.
