He and his unit of 720 Polish soldiers faced the impossible task of stopping a vastly superior German force: 42,000 men, 450 tanks, 108 150mm howitzers and 58 lighter guns. On the 4th day of the battle the defenders were running out of ammunition. The Poles had no other option but to surrender. The event that went down in history as the Polish Thermopylae would become a remarkable act of heroism and courage of the Polish troops when they fought odds of more than 40:1.
