Does a pruzbul take effect today? This is the law of the Shemittah, (the Hebrew term for the Sabbatical year) the forgiving of all loans. The pruzbul is a legal device which, in effect, transfers a private debt to the beth din, the Jewish court. Shemitat kesafim (the forgiving of all loans) cancels only debts between people, though not money owed to court. Therefore, the court is able to collect the debt whenever it desires.
